October 2008

I just spent three days based on a private property (Binalong) in the Capertee Valley. Most of my images were taken from a hide a short distance from a water feeder near the residence. The birds that came to the feeder while I was there were:

White-browed Babbler
Crimson Rosella
Eastern Rosella
Grass Parrots
Fuscous Honeyeater
Yellow–tufted Honeyeater (the most common visitor)
White-plumed Honeyeater
Noisy Friarbird
Crested Pigeon
Willie Wagtail
Olive-backed Oriole

There were also a couple of dams on the property. One in particular would be a good place to photograph parrots and honeyeaters as they come in for a drink. Walking around the property I managed to photograph the following birds:

Hooded Robin
Jacky Winter
Dusky Woodswallow
Welcome Swallow
Brown Falcon
Rainbow Bee-eaters (5 seen on one day, none the next)
Australasian Pipit
Golden Whistler

A visit to nearby Glen Davis yielded:

White-throated Treecreeper
Zebra Finch
Double-barred Finch
Rufous Whistler
Mistletoebird (seen not photographed)
More Bee-eaters
Satin Flycatcher

A morning spent at nearby Capertee Creek where it crosses Genowian Road yielded:

Regent Honeyeaters (easily seen and photographed, though they tended to stay high in the trees.)
Spotted Pardalote
King Parrot
More of the same Honeyeaters & Parrots.

After several previous trips to the valley I would strongly recommend staying on one of the many properties within the valley, rather than expecting to photograph birds from the road. There are very few suitable public spaces for bird photography apart from the actual township of Glen Davis.
I would also recommend taking in some of the wonderful landscape of the area and the oil shale mining history. If you want more specific information let me know. I will post a location guide in the appropriate forum with maps etc, shortly.
